Key Strategic Issues
The KIC is well respected for what it represents, how it operates and what it has achieved.
Today, the Western Trade Coast is an active industrial precinct, with diverse and unique synergies that link its four industrial areas. An attractive location for industrial development, the Western Trade Coast possesses an integrated industrial symbiosis, where companies located in the region engage in product and biproduct exchanges and innovative collaborations.
The Western Trade Coast is set to become strategically more significant with the development of Westport, the Government’s future port located in Kwinana, and emerging defence opportunities through AUKUS. These are in addition to the new projects being pursued or planned by individual operators.
As we approach the 2025 Western Australian State election, the KIC has developed a detailed document that sets out the priority strategic issues faced by its members and outlines what action by government is needed.
The following policy priorities have been identified by KIC as crucial areas for the next Western Australian State government to address:
1. Coordinated action across the Western Trade Coast
Adopting a coordinated, whole of government policy, planning and regulatory approach to support the future growth of the Western Trade Coast – the State’s premier heavy industrial area.
2. Decarbonisation
Transitioning towards decarbonisation is imperative for the sustainability of the heavy industry sector, requiring support and incentives from the government.
3. Westport
The future development of port infrastructure, including the Westport Strategy, is critical for supporting the export capabilities of the region’s industries.
4. Land use and planning
Effective land use and planning policies are essential to accommodate industrial growth while ensuring compatibility with surrounding communities.
5. Critical infrastructure
Additional investment in local roads, rail, pipelines, and electricity infrastructure are necessary to support industrial operations and facilitate growth.
6. Building skills and labour
Developing a skilled workforce is essential to meet the evolving demands of the industrial sector and ensure its long-term viability.
